सिन्दूरारुणविग्रहां त्रिनयनां माणिक्यमौलिस्फुरत् तारानायकशेखरां स्मितमुखीमापीनवक्षोरुहाम्। पाणिभ्यामलिपूर्णरत्नचषकं रक्तोत्पलं बिभ्रतीं सौम्यां रत्नघटस्थरक्तचरणां ध्यायेत् परामम्बिकाम्॥ अरुणां करुणातरङ्गिताक्षीं धृतपाशाङ्कुशपुष्पबाणचापाम्। अणिमादिभिरावृतां मयूखैरहमित्येव विभावये भवानीम्॥ ॐ श्रीमाता श्रीमहाराज्ञी श्रीमत्सिंहासनेश्वरी। चिदग्निकुण्डसम्भूता देवकार्यसमुद्यता॥१॥ उद्यद्भानुसहस्राभा चतुर्बाहुसमन्विता। रागस्वरूपपाशाढ्या क्रोधाकाराङ्कुशोज्ज्वला॥२॥ मनोरूपेक्षुकोदण्डा पञ्चतन्मात्रसायका। निजारुणप्रभापूरमज्जद्ब्रह्माण्डमण्डला॥३॥ चम्पकाशोकपुन्नागसौगन्धिकलसत्कचा। कुरुविन्दमणिश्रेणीकनत्कोटीरमण्डिता॥४॥ अष्टमीचन्द्रविभ्राजदलिकस्थलशोभिता। मुखचन्द्रकलङ्काभमृगनाभिविशेषका॥५॥
Transliteration

sindūrāruṇavigrahāṃ trinayanāṃ māṇikyamaulisphurat tārānāyakaśekharāṃ smitamukhīmāpīnavakṣoruhām | pāṇibhyāmalipūrṇaratnacaṣakaṃ raktotpalaṃ bibhratīṃ saumyāṃ ratnaghaṭastharaktacaraṇāṃ dhyāyet parāmambikām || aruṇāṃ karuṇātaraṅgitākṣīṃ dhṛtapāśāṅkuśapuṣpabāṇacāpām | aṇimādibhirāvṛtāṃ mayūkhairahami tyeva vibhāvaye bhavānīm || oṃ śrīmātā śrīmahārājñī śrīmatsiṃhāsaneśvarī | cidagnikuṇḍasambhūtā devakāryasamudyatā ||1|| udyadbhānusahasrābhā caturbāhusamanvitā | rāgasvarūpapāśāḍhyā krodhākārāṅkuśojjvalā ||2|| manorūpekṣukodaṇḍā pañcatanmātrasāyakā | nijāruṇaprabhāpūramajjadbrahmāṇḍamaṇḍalā ||3|| campakāśokapunnāgasaugandhikalasatkacā | kuruvindamaṇiśreṇīkanatkoṭīramaṇḍitā ||4|| aṣṭamīcandravibhrājadalikasthalaśobhitā | mukhacandrakalaṅkābhamṛganābhiviśeṣakā ||5||

Translation

One should meditate upon the Supreme Mother whose body glows like vermilion and the rising sun, who has three eyes, whose crown of rubies is adorned with the crescent moon, who has a smiling face and full, elevated bosom, who holds in her hands a jewelled cup full of honey and a red lotus, who is gentle, and whose red feet rest upon a pedestal of gems. I meditate upon Bhavani (the Goddess) who is of a crimson hue, whose eyes ripple with compassion, who holds the noose, the goad, flower arrows, and a bow, who is surrounded by rays of light and by the powers of Anima and the other Siddhis, contemplating 'I am She.' Om — (1) Shri Mata — The Mother of Shri (auspiciousness and prosperity), (2) Shri Maharajni — The great sovereign Empress, (3) Shrimat-Simhasaneshvari — The Goddess who presides over the divine throne, (4) Chidagni-Kunda-Sambhuta — She who was born from the fire-pit of consciousness, (5) Deva-Karya-Samudyata — She who rose to accomplish the task of the gods (destroying Bhandasura). (6) Udyad-Bhanu-Sahasrabha — She who shines like a thousand rising suns, (7) Chatur-Bahu-Samanvita — She who is endowed with four arms, (8) Raga-Svarupa-Pashadhya — She who holds the noose that is the form of love/desire, (9) Krodha-akara-Ankushojjvala — She who shines with the goad that is the form of righteous anger. (10) Mano-Rupekshu-Kodanda — She whose bow of sugarcane represents the mind, (11) Pancha-Tanmatra-Sayaka — She whose five arrows are the five subtle elements (sound, touch, form, taste, smell), (12) Nija-Aruna-Prabha-Pura-Majjad-Brahmanda-Mandala — She whose own crimson radiance floods and submerges the entire universe. (13) Champaka-Ashoka-Punnaga-Saugandhika-Lasat-Kacha — She whose lustrous hair is adorned with champaka, ashoka, punnaga, and saugandhika flowers, (14) Kuruvinda-Mani-Shreni-Kanat-Kotira-Mandita — She who is decorated with a crown glittering with rows of kuruvinda (ruby) gems. (15) Ashtami-Chandra-Vibhrajad-Alika-Sthala-Shobhita — She whose forehead shines like the crescent moon on the eighth day (Ashtami), (16) Mukha-Chandra-Kalankabha-Mriganabhi-Visheshaka — She who wears a musk mark (tilaka) on her moon-like face, resembling the mark on the moon.

Introduction

The Lalita Sahasranama Stotram is a sacred hymn containing one thousand divine names of Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, the supreme form of Adi Shakti (the primordial feminine power). It is found in the Lalitopakhyana section of the Brahmanda Purana. In this text, Hayagriva (a horse-headed incarnation of Lord Vishnu) narrates the thousand names of the Goddess to the sage Agastya.

According to the legend, a powerful demon named Bhandasura terrorized the three worlds. The Goddess Lalita emerged from the Chidagni Kunda (the fire of consciousness) and vanquished Bhandasura, restoring cosmic order. This stotram describes her divine form, powers, and glories manifested during this cosmic event.

Significance

The Lalita Sahasranama is considered the supreme hymn of the Shakta tradition, the branch of Hinduism that worships the Divine Mother as the ultimate reality. It holds a special place in Sri Vidya worship, the most refined school of Shakta tantra. Each name reveals an aspect of the Goddess’s power, attributes, or divine play. The stotram encodes within its names the profound mysteries of Kundalini Yoga, the Sri Chakra, and Tantra Shastra. Regular recitation is believed to bestow devotion, knowledge, prosperity, and ultimately liberation.

How to Recite

  • Fridays are considered especially auspicious for reciting this stotram.
  • Daily recitation during the nine days of Navaratri is highly meritorious.
  • Begin with the Dhyana Shlokas and meditate upon Goddess Lalita before starting.
  • Worship the Goddess with kumkum (vermilion), red flowers, and red cloth before recitation.
  • Meditation upon the Sri Chakra during recitation is considered ideal.
  • Recitation on Purnima (full moon) days is believed to bestow special grace.
