श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि। बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि॥ नाइ सुजान कृपानिधान हनुमान महाबल। बैद बिद्या नहिं जान कछु एक राम रखवाल॥ सीय राममय सब जग जानी। करउँ प्रनाम जोरि जुग पानी॥ सुनि खगेस रघुपति गुन गाहा। परम प्रीति तन पुलकि उल्लाहा॥ बल बुद्धि बिद्या तब माया। सब के करतार रघुराया॥ प्रनवउँ पवनकुमार खल बन पावक ज्ञानघन। जासु हृदय आगार बसहिं राम सर चाप धन॥ सेवक सुखदायक सब लायक रामभजन निज नेम को। करुनानिधान हनुमान महा बलवान हेम को॥ जानत सकल जगत जस तुम्हरो सत सेवक राम को। जो चह सुभ कल्यान ताहि भजन श्रीराम को॥ बाहुक बाहु पीर बहुतेरे। करउँ कौन विधि दूर निवारूँ। एक कृपा तुम्हरी निरवाहि। आरत जानि सरन मोहि राखी॥ रामकृपा नासहिं अभिमाना। लोभ मोह अज्ञान मद माना। छीजहिं सकल रोग बस जाहीं। होइ सुखी जब राम कृपा पाहीं॥ पवनतनय बल पवन समाना। बुद्धि बिबेक बिज्ञान निधाना। कवन सो काज कठिन जग माहीं। जो नहिं होइ तात तुम्ह पाहीं॥ राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा। अंजनि पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥ महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥ तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै। जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥ अन्तकाल रघुबर पुर जाई। जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई॥

śrīguru carana saroja raja nija manu mukuru sudhāri | baranauṃ raghubara bimala jasu jo dāyaku phala cāri || nāi sujāna kṛpānidhāna hanumāna mahābala | baida bidyā nahiṃ jāna kachu eka rāma rakhavāla || sīya rāmamaya saba jaga jānī | karauṃ pranāma jori juga pānī || suni khageśa raghupati guna gāhā | parama prīti tana pulaki ullāhā || bala buddhi bidyā taba māyā | saba ke karatāra raghurāyā || pranavauṃ pavanakumāra khala bana pāvaka jñānaghana | jāsu hṛdaya āgāra basahiṃ rāma sara cāpa dhana || sevaka sukhadāyaka saba lāyaka rāmabhajana nija nema ko | karunānidhāna hanumāna mahā balavāna hema ko || jānata sakala jagata jasa tumharo sata sevaka rāma ko | jo caha subha kalyāna tāhi bhajana śrīrāma ko || bāhuka bāhu pīra bahuterē | karauṃ kauna vidhi dūra nivārūṃ | eka kṛpā tumharī niravāhi | ārata jāni sarana mohi rākhī || rāmakṛpā nāsahiṃ abhimānā | lobha moha ajñāna mada mānā | chījahiṃ sakala roga basa jāhīṃ | hoi sukhī jaba rāma kṛpā pāhīṃ || pavanatanaya bala pavana samānā | buddhi bibeka bijñāna nidhānā | kavana so kāja kaṭhina jaga māhīṃ | jo nahiṃ hoi tāta tumha pāhīṃ || rāma dūta atulita bala dhāmā | añjani putra pavanasuta nāmā || mahābīra bikrama bajaraṃgī | kumati nivāra sumati ke saṃgī || tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai | janama janama ke dukha bisarāvai || antakāla raghubara pura jāī | jahāṃ janma haribhakta kahāī ||

Translation

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I sing the pure glory of Raghubara (Lord Rama), the bestower of the four fruits of life — Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. I bow to the wise, compassionate, and mighty Hanuman. I know nothing of the science of medicine; my sole protector is Lord Rama alone. Knowing the entire world to be pervaded by Sita and Rama, I join both my hands and offer my salutations. O Khagesha (Garuda)! Hearing the tale of Lord Rama's virtues, the body thrills with supreme love and joy. Strength, intellect, and knowledge are all your divine power (Hanuman's maya). The creator of all is Lord Raghuraya (Rama). I salute Pavanakumara (Hanuman), who is like fire to the forest of the wicked, who is the embodiment of knowledge, and in the temple of whose heart Lord Rama resides with his bow and arrows. O Hanuman, giver of happiness to your devotees, capable in all things, whose sole vow is the worship of Lord Rama, treasure of compassion, the mightiest one, pure as gold! The whole world knows your glory as the true servant of Rama. Whoever desires auspicious welfare should worship Lord Rama. O Hanuman! The pain in my arms is immense (the Bahuk disease). By what means can I remove it? Only your grace can sustain me. Knowing me to be suffering, keep me in your refuge. By the grace of Lord Rama, arrogance, greed, delusion, ignorance, pride, and vanity are all destroyed. All diseases diminish and come under control. One becomes truly happy when one receives the grace of Lord Rama. O Son of the Wind! Your strength equals the wind itself. You are the treasure of intellect, discernment, and wisdom. What task in this world is so difficult that it cannot be accomplished with you by one's side? O messenger of Rama, abode of incomparable strength, son of Anjani, known as Pavanasuta (son of the wind)! O great hero, valiant one, with a body strong as a thunderbolt (Bajrangi)! Destroy evil thoughts and be the companion of good wisdom. By worshipping you, one attains Lord Rama and forgets the sorrows of countless lifetimes. At the time of death, one reaches the abode of Raghubara (Vaikuntha), and if born again, is known as a devotee of Hari.

Introduction

The Hanuman Bahuk is a deeply moving and powerful hymn to Lord Hanuman, composed by the great poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas (1532-1623 CE). Behind its composition lies a poignant story. Tulsidas was afflicted with severe, excruciating pain in his arms (bahu). No remedy or treatment provided any relief. In his anguish, he turned to his beloved deity Hanuman and composed this fervent prayer.

The word ‘Bahuk’ means ‘disease of the arms.’ In this composition, Tulsidas describes his suffering and makes a heartfelt plea to Hanuman for relief. It is said that Hanuman was so moved by Tulsidas’s devotion that he appeared and healed the poet’s affliction. The text is composed in Awadhi, Tulsidas’s mother tongue and the language in which he composed the Ramcharitmanas.

Significance

The Hanuman Bahuk is considered extremely effective for relief from physical pain, disease, and suffering. It is especially recited for ailments of the arms, limbs, and body. The composition embodies Tulsidas’s unwavering devotion, his absolute trust in Hanuman, and the glory of Lord Rama. It stands as a remarkable testament to the power of devotion and complete surrender to the divine. Many devotees across India recite it to this day when suffering from illness, believing in its healing power.

How to Recite

  • Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered especially auspicious for reciting this hymn.
  • Sit before an image or idol of Hanuman while reciting.
  • Before recitation, offer sindoor (vermilion) and jasmine oil to Hanuman.
  • When suffering from physical pain or illness, recite regularly with sincere devotion.
  • Recitation on Hanuman Jayanti is considered especially meritorious.
