Translation

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of the lotus feet of Sri Guru, I describe the pure glory of Sri Raghubar (Lord Rama), who bestows the four fruits of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha). Knowing my body to be devoid of intelligence, I remember Pavan Kumar (Hanuman). Bestow upon me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities. Hail Hanuman, ocean of knowledge and virtue. Hail the Lord of monkeys, renowned across the three worlds. Messenger of Lord Rama, abode of incomparable strength, son of Anjani, known as the son of the Wind God. O great hero of tremendous valor, Bajrangi, you dispel evil thoughts and are the companion of good intellect. Golden-complexioned, magnificently adorned, with earrings in the ears and curly hair. In your hands shine the thunderbolt and the flag. On your shoulder is adorned the sacred thread of munja grass. Incarnation of Lord Shiva, son of Kesari, possessing great radiance and valor, worshipped by the whole world. Learned, virtuous, and extremely clever. Ever eager to carry out the tasks of Lord Rama. You delight in listening to the tales of the Lord. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita dwell in your heart. Assuming a tiny form, you appeared before Sita. Assuming a fearsome form, you set Lanka ablaze. Assuming a gigantic form, you slayed the demons. You accomplished all the tasks of Lord Ramachandra. Bringing the Sanjeevani herb, you revived Lakshmana. Sri Raghuveer embraced you joyfully. Lord Rama praised you greatly and said — you are dear to me as my brother Bharata. The thousand-headed Shesha sings your glory. Saying so, Lord Rama embraced you. Sanaka and other sages, Brahma and other gods, Narada, Saraswati, and Shesha all sing your praises. Yama, Kubera, the guardians of directions — even poets and scholars cannot fully describe your glory. You did a great favor to Sugriva. You introduced him to Rama and helped him attain the throne. Vibhishana heeded your counsel and became the Lord of Lanka, as the whole world knows. The sun, situated thousands of yojanas away, you swallowed it thinking it to be a sweet fruit. Placing Lord Rama's ring in your mouth, you leapt across the ocean — no wonder in that. All the difficult tasks in the world become easy by your grace. You are the guardian of Rama's gate. None can enter without your permission. All happiness is found in your refuge. With you as protector, there is nothing to fear. Only you can contain your own radiance. The three worlds tremble at your roar. Evil spirits and ghosts do not come near when the name of Mahavir (Hanuman) is uttered. All diseases are destroyed and all pain is removed by continuously chanting the name of brave Hanuman. Hanuman rescues from all troubles those who meditate on him in thought, deed, and word. Rama is the supreme ascetic king over all, and you have accomplished all his tasks. Whoever comes to you with any desire obtains the boundless fruit of life. Your glory extends across all four ages. Your fame illuminates the entire world. You are the protector of saints and sages. Destroyer of demons, beloved of Lord Rama. You are the bestower of eight siddhis and nine nidhis. Such a boon was given by Mother Janaki (Sita). You possess the elixir of Ram's devotion. May you ever remain the servant of Raghupati. By singing your devotion, one attains Lord Rama and the sorrows of many lifetimes are forgotten. At the end of life, one goes to the abode of Rama, and wherever one is born, one is known as a devotee of Hari. Without holding any other deity in mind, one who serves Hanuman attains all happiness. All troubles are cut away and all pain is removed for one who remembers the mighty hero Hanuman. Hail, hail, hail Lord Hanuman! Bestow your grace upon us as a Guru does. Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and attains great bliss. Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains spiritual powers, with Lord Shiva (Gaurisa) as witness. Tulsidas is forever the servant of Hari (Rama). O Lord, make my heart your dwelling place. O son of the Wind God, remover of afflictions, embodiment of auspiciousness! Along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita, dwell in my heart, O king of gods.

Introduction

The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the Awadhi language, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is one of the most widely recited prayers in Hinduism. It consists of two opening dohas, forty chaupais, and one closing doha.

Significance

Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is believed to remove fear, suffering, and obstacles. It is especially recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Devotees believe that regular recitation invokes the blessings and grace of Lord Hanuman.

How to Recite

The Hanuman Chalisa should be recited after bathing, seated on a clean mat. Begin by meditating on Lord Hanuman, then start the recitation from the opening dohas followed by all forty chaupais and the closing doha.
