Salutations to Goddess Durga, bestower of happiness. Salutations to Goddess Amba, remover of sorrow. Your divine light is formless. Its radiance is spread across the three worlds. Moon-like forehead, vast face, red eyes, and fierce brows. The form of the Mother is exceedingly beautiful. Those who behold her attain immense happiness. Her incomparable radiance and beauty are indescribable. She is worshipped across all three worlds, and her virtues are sung. You accomplished difficult tasks on earth, removed the wicked, and gave happiness to the saints. You conquered the wicked and saved the saints. You protected devotees as you did Draupadi. You granted your vision to sages and rishis, and bestowed happiness upon the saints and pious. When one performed severe austerities, you thoughtfully bestowed knowledge. You alone are Durga, who ferries across the ocean of existence, destroyer of fear, and remover of suffering. You gave knowledge and wisdom to all. Those who took your refuge never suffered. You destroyed Shumbha and Nishumbha. By Shiva's grace, you fulfilled everyone's hopes. When Shambhu was endangered by the Halahal poison, you came to protect and assist. You bring infinite joy and auspiciousness. Instruments resound and divine sounds reverberate. Mother Gaura dances eternally. You annihilated the demon Raktabeeja. You overpowered Dhumranayan (Dhumralochan). O crusher of Munda, you are death to the wicked. You severed the heads of Chanda and Munda and struck down Raktabeeja to the ground. You pierced the heart of Mahishasura. You are that very Mahishasurmardini, O divine maiden. You are Brahmani, Rudrani, and desire. You are Vaishnavi, the peace of the world. In times of trouble, sages took your refuge, and all great obstacles were removed. No one could fathom the secret of your power form. The form of Shakti pervades the entire world. All Puranas and scriptures proclaim that Durga Shakti is the benefactress of all. You make all planets auspicious. You bless worshippers with children and more. You delight the mind in your manifest form. You are also called the formless supreme Brahman. For devotion, you assumed many forms. Even Shambhu could not fathom your depths. You gave prosperity and accomplishment to all. Whoever reads this chalisa attains sovereignty. Your abode has four guardians — Manmohan (Vishnu), Shiva, Kartik (Kartikeya), and Kumar. Accept those who take your refuge. With folded hands, this prayer is made. Whoever sings the Durga Chalisa enjoys all happiness and attains the supreme state. The Goddess overpowered the demons and taught a lesson to all. Destroying enemies and saving the saints, you appeared at the gateway of auspiciousness. You swing the creation as if it were a plaything. Seeing you, the mind becomes joyful and still. For a hundred days, men and women worship you with care and devotion. Sons are born, wealth and prosperity come. Enemies perish and one is saved from sorrow. And many kinds of happiness are attained. Even the sick become healthy by your vision. Whoever chants the nine Durgas attains all types of auspiciousness. First is Shailputri, known to the world. Second is Brahmacharini, pleasing to the mind. Third is Chandraghanta of auspicious name. Fourth is Kushmanda, abode of happiness. Fifth is Skandamata, known to the world. Sixth is Katyayani, the great queen. Seventh is Kalratri, the fearsome. Eighth is Mahagauri, the bestower of happiness. Ninth is Siddhidatri, mother of the world. She bestows all happiness and showers auspiciousness. Whoever sings the Durga Chalisa daily surely attains the desired fruits of the heart.
